![]() It was discovered that their new browser doesn't block ads from Microsoft, at least in certain circumstances. I actually stopped using them on principle as I don't need their CEO deciding on high what "disinformation" is, especially when they would never think to downrank misinformation spread by US officials and media corporations (aka half the internet). I think a lot of the reactions to the tweet were not actually in line with the technical reality of what they actually did, though given the overall mission DDG claims and some of their past statements it was pretty hypocritical. Their CEO came out and tweeted that they were going to downrank Russian sites to "combat disinformation". Two things happened recently that caused controversy. I don't want one company having my entire digital life, I'll use Proton for e-mail, Dropbox for file storage, Nextcloud for contacts/calendars, DuckDuckGo for search, and so on - each company gets one thing from me, if they want to data mine my whole life they have to at least all work together and I'll make it hard for them if I can. They have all these other cloud products, but I learned from my time with Google. The more products a company expands into, the more conflict of interest the company will have in fighting the temptation not to start monetizing it - and the more deeply that you get invested in their fleet of products, the more they have you by the balls with vendor lock-in and you're more likely to tolerate their change in direction because it's too inconvenient to leave them now.Įdit to add: I treat Proton in a similar way, I use them for e-mail and nothing else. Mozilla makes a fine web browser, DuckDuckGo made a good search engine (which you can adblock yourself and keep it in line). ![]() It's better to spread your eggs around and use smaller focused products from different companies. Tracking protection on their browser? I had that well enough with Firefox for Android which supports add-ons. If they had rolled out an e-mail service, calendar service, cloud file storage service, would people have all been flocking to the DuckDuckGo cloud because of the brand recognition? Because that's how we got Google. Have we learned nothing from Google? About putting all your eggs into one basket? The DDG search engine was fine, I didn't want any more products from them. I kind of worried about something like this when I saw they had a browser. The number of spam emails which have hit my systems which are "Hey it's ur bank, click on this sus link", but the contact email address they sent it to isn't and is instead is hilarious. Thus, when such contact methods inevitably get sold, stolen, or lost, and used to try and spam, scam, or otherwise annoy me, I know exactly which company or service that contact information came from, and can cut it off (usually along with the service which failed to protect its contact information). Each one gets a unique email or other contact method for me (if I even deem it useful for them to have one at all). In the same vein, I don't extend nontrackability to such places. There are no advantages and it opens up all kinds of vulnerabilities. There is, quite simply, no good reason to extend trust to a company or service. Even if they're bought out by someone else who is happy to do so. ![]() ![]() I don't sign up for them or, if I do, give them accurate personal information in the first place, so I don't have my personal information lost, sold, or stolen by those services. ![]() People complain about online services selling their data or being hacked and their data stolen.
